Scams are on the rise in every industry. This is especially true for travel. It’s crucial to protect yourself and your hard-earned money. Here are some key tips to help you navigate the world of travel advisors and payments.
Verify Your Travel Advisor
The first step is to ensure you’re working with a reputable agent or advisor. Take a moment to check their profiles online. Look for memberships in governing bodies. For instance, CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association, is essential if you’re planning a cruise. Additionally, see if they belong to ASTA, the American Society of Travel Advisors. This organization is a good indicator of professionalism. Local chamber and BBB associations are also worth checking. Remember, we are part of all these organizations!
Payment Methods Matter
Most advisors in North America won’t ask you to use PayPal, Venmo, or write them a personal check. While some advisors may charge planning fees, the majority do not. Typically, advisors who take credit card information use it to pay your deposit or payments directly to the cruise line, tour operator, or resort. They might also bundle air and hotel through companies like Apple, Pleasant, Vacations Express, or Expedia.
Stay in Touch with Your Advisor
Once you’ve started working with your advisor, they should be the ones reaching out to remind you of new payments. At the very least, they’ll generate requests from the cruise line or tour operator. Always verify any payment requests before proceeding. This is key! Scammers often monitor social media posts and online groups, especially on platforms like Facebook and Reddit. They can easily gather your email or phone number and attempt to solicit payments related to your travel. So, check with your advisor FIRST!
Ask Before You Pay
If you’re ever unsure about a payment request, please ask your advisor first. They are there to help you and ensure your travel plans go smoothly. Protecting yourself from scams is essential, and communication is key.
